Island Tribe Supports The Girl Guides Nepalese Adventure - 13th October 2010

Island Tribe are please to announce that they are supporting an expedition by a group from Girlguiding Southwest who are planning on scaling Baden-Powell Peak in Nepal this December.

On the 6th December 2010 a group from girlguiding south west will be setting out to climb Baden-Powell Peak, Nepal, with an elevation of 5718m (18760ft). Baden-Powell Peak, locally known as Urkema Peak, is situated in the Langtan region of Nepal, well away from the usual trekking routes of the Everest region. The peak was named after the father of the Scouts movement by the Nepal Government to mark the centenary celebration of the International Scouts movement. And this is one of the reasons why this peak has been chosen. Apart from it being a big challenge to the team, who have none or little experience of climbing in the Himalayas, but hopefully will be the first British ascent, as looking at the records there has been no brits up yet, and the first all female team to climb the peak. As far as we know from records there has only been one other expedition to climb this peak back in 2007.

The expedition will start with an 8hr bus journey on some bumpy roads up to a height of 1400m. From here it will be a 6 day trek through villages that have been untouched by modernity, with nights spent under canvass, and giving us enough time to acclimatize. December is generally a settled month with minimum snow fall, so should bring sunny days, and cold nights, some as low as -30. The summit day will be a grueling 14hrs setting off way before the sun rises. It will be a mixture of walking and climbing on fixed ropes across glaciers and crevasses. After a well deserved nights sleep we will descend back to 1400m, which should only take 3 days, ready for the journey back to Kathmandu and some well deserved drinks!

The team has been training for this for over 8 months, with weekends in Scotland to get the heart going and to practice some of the mountaineering skills that will be needed. This will be a journey of a lifetime!

Congratulations go to IslandTribe's own waterman, Nick Thorn, who is the first person to swim solo from Lundy to Woolacombe (19.8 miles) and in a great time of just six and a half hours!

A team of four swimmers successfully completed a relay Lundy Swim last summer. The only other known similar swim attempt was from Hartland Point to Lundy in the 1950s by an Egyptian army captain.

Please support Nick in raising money for Children's Hospice South West by donating. Find out more about the great work they do here. Please give generously, every little bit helps!

Island Tribe Expression Session 2010 Results - 14th July 2010

We thought you might be interested in seeing some of the pics from our Island Tribe Expression Session held over the weekend. Some of the top pics are available on www.wavescape.co.za and www.thebombsurf.com. The event was a huge success and even stole some of the limelight from the Mr Price Pro final! We had 15 guys in the water (1 heat only), surfing hard for 45 minutes, a real spectacle. Far more exciting than a 2 man heat in a conventional contest final. There were 3 prizes: biggest air, most radical maneuver and most powerful turn. R7000 for each winner.

In other news.. Island Tribe is sponsoring kite surfer Kirk Hollis in his quest to kite surf from Sodwana, South Africa, all the way to Northern Kenya. He will then travel overland to Lake Turkana for some more kiting and make his way to Uganda. We gave him a brand new HD Go Pro on-board video camera to film the odyssey. The footage will be uploaded to the blogs he is writing for the worlds largest kite surfing publications (5 different mags), kiting websites, Mens Health Magazine, Out There Magazine, Go Magazine and of course our website. The footage is owned by Island Tribe and should get us some great worldwide coverage especially in the kiting world. He is unsupported and only carries a back pack with some real basic necessities. Will keep you posted on how to follow this crazy adventure.

Island Tribe Expression Session at Mr Price Pro - 9th July 2010

Thursday July 8, 2010- The Island Tribe Expression Session is a great addition to the 5 Star Mr Price Pro Ballito, giving surfers even more to compete for at this year’s R1 Million event.

Throwing in an extra R21 000 in prize-money, with three separate R7000 prize cheques for the biggest and most radical manoeuvres, South Africa?s most progressive surfers along with some top internationals, will be enticed to pull out all the stops with high risk moves not normally seen in mainstream competition.

‘Expression sessions are always a fun, they give you the freedom to just go for it without worrying about losing a heat,’ Greg Emslie said. ‘The fact that Island Tribe are throwing in 21K is a bonus and will give surfers a great opportunity to take home some extra prize-money.’

Spectators can expect show- stopping performances as surfers eagerly throw caution to the wind, attempting ‘new-school’ moves like rodeo-flips, superman’s, double grab aerial reverses and more, the sky being the limit!

Unlike normal competition where you have two or four man heats, the Island Tribe Expression session will see ten invited surfers go toe-to-toe in pursuit of the lucrative prize pool, without restriction for the number of waves ridden or how many attempts it takes to complete a new move.

The Mr Price Pro Ballito will culminate on either Saturday or Sunday depending on conditions and the Island Tribe Expression Session will take place just prior to the Final.

The Cape Epic Mountain Bike Race - 30th March 2010

Island Tribe at the 2010 Cape Epic

The Cape Epic the Magical and Untamed African mountain bike race has become the biggest cycling event in South Africa. Every year around March/April all attention turns to the most challenging race in Africa and one of the biggest mountain bike races in the World. The Cape Epic has put SA on the international cycling map with a bang. From day 1 the Epic was massive, well organised, an experience of a lifetime and addictive as the repeat riders will testify. For any cyclist it is a serious adventure and a challenge, but for the average cyclist it is an almost insurmountable challenge. Going into the race for the first time is an experience in itself, it truly is a voyage into the unknown, Island Tribe was there in the form of Mike and Nick Arthur... well done boys
